Regla 12 · Faltas y conducta incorrecta
IFAB Laws of the Game (extract)
First you need to know whether both players were challenging for the ball. If they were, the referee judges whether the contact was careless (foul, no card), reckless (yellow) or used excessive force (red). If they weren't, the key is whether excessive force was used, because Law 12 then classes it as violent conduct. The VAR can only intervene on a possible straight red when there's a clear and obvious error.
The score was 0-0. Villares had to leave the pitch for a minute after receiving treatment and then came back on. Deportivo went ahead in the 63rd minute and Levante equalised in the 82nd.
