“Las entradas o disputas del balón que pongan en peligro la integridad física de un adversario o en las que el jugador se emplee con fuerza excesiva o brutalidad deberán sancionarse como «juego brusco y grave».”

Law 12 distinguishes between a reckless tackle (yellow) and serious foul play (straight red), which endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force. Speed, height of contact and use of the studs are the usual criteria.
The match was 1-1. Alavés played with ten men from then on and Atlético won 1-2 with a goal in the 87th minute. The CTA (Spain's referees' committee) analysed the incident on Tiempo de Revisión and judged it a red.
