Against Villarreal he shone starting from the right flank, and in Rome, where Madrid came back from 3-1 down to win 3-4, he started in the double pivot alongside Tchouaméni and played almost the whole second half at right-back after Dumfries went off. Mourinho sees it as a resource for specific moments: "As we only have one Fede, seeing him at full-back is something very specific." Part of the press wants him to switch roles and for someone else, such as Arda Güler or Bernardo Silva, to play in midfield. On the other side, Valverde himself said last season that he does not feel comfortable at full-back, and Mourinho insists his decisions come from his own analysis, not outside opinions.
